Taking care of your child’s teeth doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does need to start early. Good oral hygiene habits learned in childhood can last a lifetime and help prevent common dental problems like cavities and gum issues.
Children should brush their teeth twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed. A soft to medium toothbrush works best, as it cleans effectively while being gentle on young teeth and gums.
Using the right amount of toothpaste is important, too. For children under 3 years old, just a tiny smear about the size of a grain of rice is enough. For children between 3 and 6 years, a pea-sized amount does the job. More toothpaste doesn’t mean cleaner teeth, and using the correct amount helps keep brushing safe.
Parents should stay involved during brushing time. Young children often need guidance, so supervising helps ensure they brush properly and remember not to swallow the toothpaste. Encourage them to spit it out and simply rinse after brushing.
As children grow and their teeth begin to touch, flossing becomes important. Flossing helps clean the spaces a toothbrush can’t reach and adds extra protection against cavities.
With a little daily attention and encouragement, parents can help their children develop healthy dental habits that support bright, confident smiles for years to come.
